Programs

Check out the different projects we are implementing.

Wellspring Quality Care, Inc. currently operates a residential facility in Region 6 (Greater Edmonton Area). The group care home is licensed to care for up to six male and/or female children and youth from birth to 17 years of age.

Our program is available to youth of both genders from birth to 18 in developing skills to enhance their lives. We will make provisions for youth above 18, with an extension of care, so the move into adulthood is not a cliff. The program is intended to accommodate youth until 18, and considerations are given to those with an extension of care.

Stability and strength-building

On Your Way (OYW)

A home-like setting for youth who need a stable environment while next steps are being decided.

  • 13–17 years
  • Males and females
  • Referred by a Designated First Nation Authority (DFNA) and/or a Child and Family Services Authority (CFSA)

Life skills and transition to independence

On Your Mark (OYM)

Built for the gap when a youth is leaving care and needs practical skills for independence.

  • 16–18 years
  • Males and females

Youth who turn 18 in the program have to exit no later than one day after their 18th birthday, as per Region 6 licensing expectations, unless an extension of care applies as described above.

Why a youth may be placed

  • Long-term care

Youth who need shelter and care for a defined longer period until parents can resume parental responsibility and/or the youth can move to a supported independent living program.

  • Emergency care

Youth coming directly from abuse, neglect, or another crisis, referred for safety and security until another living arrangement is in place.

  • Short-term care

Youth who need a transitional placement between homes (waiting for a foster home, a repatriated child, and similar situations).

Who is not eligible

A youth is not eligible for either On Your Way or On Your Mark when:

  • They have a history of violence and/or a history of sexual perpetration.
  • They have an active, all-consuming addiction and would pose a risk to peers and/or staff.
  • They have a significant physical impairment that the house cannot accommodate, because the program accommodation is not wheelchair accessible.

Staffing model

Specific programming is provided to the person served and their guardian at intake, and is carried by the Director, Home Supervisor, and front-line staff. The published model is two key workers for six youth, one-to-one support when a placement needs it, and one overnight sleep staff.

  • 2 key workers to 6 youth
  • 1:1 when a placement requires it
  • 1 overnight sleep staff
  • Group living covered 24 hours a day
  • 2:6 Key workers to youth

Referral path

  1. Step 1

    Identify a possible fit

A CFSA or DFNA worker identifies a possible fit.

  2. Step 2

    Call or write

The worker calls 780-756-5059 or writes to wellspring.groupcare@gmail.com.

  3. Step 3

    Confirm the screen

Wellspring confirms age, pathway (OYW or OYM or other group living), and the ineligibility screen.

  4. Step 4

    Share intake

Intake information is shared with the young person and their guardian.

  5. Step 5

    Set programming

Specific programming is set by the Director, Home Supervisor, and front-line staff.

  6. Step 6

    Daily support

Daily support runs in the home: communication, conflict, peers, family, school, meals, culture.

  7. Step 7

    A less intrusive next step

The plan aims at a less intrusive next step: family, foster care, or supported independent living. Emergency and short-term stays end when the next arrangement is ready.
